Motorcycling is not the safest activity, which we all know, but you can also get hurt off your motorcycle. Not every injury on your motorcycle travels will require a trauma kit; sometimes you just need a band-aid, but everyone should carry some sort of first aid kit. Some small, simple ones have band-aids and alcohol wipes, and then there are very advanced trauma kits. You can buy a simple kit and add things to it to make it better. Not everyone has to have a trauma kit, especially if you have no idea how to use the stuff in it. If you ride a lot of miles, taking a first aid class or a motorcycle-specific emergency response class is not a bad idea.
Here is a minimum recommended list of stuff you should have in your bike’s first aid kit:
- Assorted adhesive bandages
- Assorted gauze pads
- Antibacterial spray or ointment
- Gauze rolls
- Non-allergenic tape
- Scissors (Trauma Shears)
Here are some other things that can also be very useful:
- Bandannas
- Aspirin
- Benadryl
- Tampons
- Sanitary Napkins
- gloves – (medical)
- CPR Mask
- small flashlight
An over-the-counter first aid kit will work fine, and so will putting one together on your own. I have a trauma kit with all my supplies in a one-gallon Ziploc bag.
Here is the link to some first aid classes. You can also contact your local hospital or fire department, and they can usually direct you to the correct class.
